Meringued Milk

Friday 4 July 2014

Is the glass half full or half empty?

The optimist says the glass is half full.

The pessimist says the glass is half empty.

The realist says the glass contains half the required amount of liquid for it not to overflow.

The "logical" says that if the glass is in process of being filled then it is half full; if it's in the process of being emptied then it is half empty; and if its status in terms of being filled or emptied is unknown then the glass is one in which a boundary between liquid and gas lies exactly midway between the inside bottom and the upper rim, assuming that the glass has parallel sides and rests on a level surface, and where it does not then the liquid/gas boundary lies exactly midway between the upper and lower equal halves of the available total volume of said glass. Sorry, what was the question?

Anyway... Attitude is not about whether the glass is half full or half empty, it's about who is paying for the next round.

No, now seriously, from my point of view it doesn’t matter whether the glass is half full or half empty. What really matters is how much the glass weighs.
The weight of the glass is something completely relative, as it depends on how long I have been holding the glass. If I’ve been holding it for 1 minute, it probably wouldn’t seem heavy at all. If I hold it for an hour, I will probably end up with a sore arm. If I hold it for 1 day, my arm will go numb and paralyzed.

Is not the weight of the glass what matters, but our perception of how long we are holding it.

I tend not to hold the glass for too long, so I always try to have nice things in it to drink.

This week’s recipe will make you have your glass completely empty, but the good thing is that you will be able to refill as many times as you want. This chilled milk with lemon and cinnamon is a typical summery drink in Spain. You can add some egg whites beat until stiff for a nutritious meringued milk, or  300 ml of whipped double cream for a refreshing ice cream.

This time I’ve made just the drink as my kids have had it for breakfast on those warm days instead of normal milk and I wanted it to be a bit more healthy.

WHAT DO YOU NEED

2 Pint Fresh Whole/Semi Skimmed Milk
100gr White Sugar
Peel from 2 Lemons
3/4 Cinnamon Sticks

WHAT DO YOU DO

Put the milk, sugar, lemon and cinnamon into a big saucepan. Bring to boil and then quickly turn
the heat to a minimum. Let infuse for about 40 minutes stirring regularly.

Strain the mixture through a sieve and let cold completely. Then put into the fridge overnight, sprinkle some ground cinnamon on top and serve chilled.
